Cornet took more than three hours to clinch the title, making it one of longest WTA match of the year so far.

The French star fell to the ground after taking the final point off Italian Giorgi.

“What a match,” the French star exclaimed afterwards.

“It was definitely a huge fight, which is what I expected, and I had to save a match point to win the title, so it feels very special. I gave everything I had.”

Cornet, who is currently No. 21 in the WTA rankings, had defeated tournament favourite Agnieszka Radwanska on Saturday.

Sunday's victory against Giorgi (WTA No. 54) marks the fourth WTA title of her career. (nh)
