The rally, which marks the fourth round of the World Cup, is proving a tantalising battle, with Polish drivers taking five of the top ten places in the Sealine overall rankings thus far.

Malysz is currently leading the Polish pack in fourth position, together with co-driver Rafal Marton, while a Qatari-French combo of Nasser al-Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel are in pole position.

“We are 41 minutes behind the leader, and there are less than 11 between us and third place,” Malysz commented on his Facebook profile after finishing the second stage.

“The time differences are pretty small, so keep your fingers crossed for us,” he added.

Just behind Malysz are Krzysztof Holowczyc and his German partner Andreas Schulz in fifth, while Marcin Kaczmarski and Felipe Palmeiro (Portugal) are in sixth. Marek Dabrowski and Jacek Czachor are in seventh, while Czech-Polish duo Miroslav Zapletal and Maciej Marton are in eighth.

Meanwhile, hopes are running high in the quad category, with Polish star Rafal Sonik is in second place.

The Sealine Cross Country Rally finishes on 25 April. (nh)
