The event, which marks the fourth round of the Quad Cross-Country World Championships, had got off to a shaky start for the captain of the Polish team, with Sonik penalised for having to change his engine on Sunday.

“Perhaps for the first time in my life I started out as the last contestant,” he said of Stage 2 of the rally.

“This meant I had to contend with the most dust and holes, as well as stones that were thrown into the road,” he added.

“We don't have any display devices such as Sentinel in our vehicles, so I had to yell at slower rivals to give way.

“I was furious, but this mood helped me to move up from 10th to 6th position by the first refuelling.”

The Krakow-born racer managed to not only win the stage, but also to move up to third place in the overall rankings for the rally.

The event ends on Thursday, and Sonik is currently leading the field after four rallies in the Quad Cross-Country World Championships. (nh)
