The fifth Cycle Poland ride started in Szczecin on the Baltic coast on 14 June, with world champion Maja Wloszczowska and Polish champion Damian Zielinski acting as honorary patrons this year.

The event was created by London-based Pole Ewa Holender, and since its inception her foundation has raised over 100,000 pounds to support over 30 institutions across Poland.

“The ride started after a palliative care organisation in Poland helped my family look after my grandmother during the final months of her battle with cancer,” Holender told Polish Radio.

“I wanted to say thanks somehow, so I decided to cycle across Poland to raise money.

“Five years later the ride is still going, and grows each year!”

More about this year's ride and the Alina Foundation can be found at the organisation's official site. (nh)
