The crew of the SY Polonez set sail from Szczecin on Monday, bound for the Norwegian port city of Fredrikstad, where the race will begin.

The Tall Ships Races were founded in the 1950s with the goal of promoting international friendship, and at least 50 percent of each crew must be made up of young sailing aficionados.

An extraordinarily diverse array of vessels takes part in the regatta, with some entrants appearing to have sailed straight out of a costume drama movie.

Szczecin has been a sponsor of the races since 2010, and the SY Polonez will sail from Fredrikstad to the Danish port of Esbjerg in the coming showdown.

The yacht was built in Szczecin in 1972, and Captain Krzysztof Baranowski set sail in June of that year on his round the world odyssey.

He became the third Pole ever to complete the feat, finally dropping anchor in June 1973, after having covered 35, 424 nautical miles. (nh)
