The Taiwanese climber had become stranded at a camp at 7500m, and his condition was apparently deteriorating swiftly.

According to the Poles, other expedition teams, including Taiwanese, declined to risk taking part in the rescue attempt.

“Attempts to recruit partners from other expeditions in the rescue ended in failure,” the Poles claimed on the Facebook page of the association of the Polish Winter Climbing Himalayans.

Climbers Mariusz Grudzien, Marek Chmielarski and Grzegorz Bielejec took part in the rescue, bringing oxygen and medicinal drugs to the stranded man.

Bielejec abandoned his own bid to reach the summit, so as to take part in the operation.

Two Polish climbers died on Broad Peak, the seventh highest mountain in the world, in March 2013 after apparently succumbing to exhaustion while descending the peak. (nh)
