A text message sent by Pawel Michalski, another member of the Polish expedition, confirmed the news.

“The expedition has succeeded!” Michalski wrote.

“Janusz Golab is at the summit!”

Michalski revealed that he himself had suspended his own bid to reach the top, after coming within 150 metres of the summit. Colleague Artur Malek has done likewise.

However, according to Michalski, expedition leader Marcin Kaczkan is still trying to make it to the summit.

“More details soon,” Michalski wrote.

K2, which lies on the Pakistani-Chinese border, is regarded as the most challenging of all the so-called eight-thousanders – peaks over 8000 metres.

At least 77 climbers have died while trying to conquer the peak, including several Poles. Little more than 300 mountaineers have made it to the peak.

In recent days, Polish mountaineers saw more drama, when three climbers rescued a stranded Taiwanese colleague on Broad Peak. (nh)
