Hammer thrower Wlodarczyk hits podium in Zurich victory

Polish hammer thrower Anita Wlodarczyk won gold on Friday at the 22nd European Athletics Championships in the Swiss city of Zurich after throwing 78.76 metres, a new championship and Polish record.

On her last attempt in the competition, Wlodarczyk additionally managed to hit the top step of the podium. Upon inspection, Wlodarczyk said “I think I’m pretty good at aiming in this sport”.

“In Szczecin during the Polish championships I managed to hit a flowerpot,” Wlodarczyk quipped, adding that “now I’m aiming for the world record on 23 August […] a the National Stadium in Warsaw for the Kalina Skolimowska Memorial Competition”.

Meanwhile, Polish athletes have so far won two gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich, advancing to fifth in the overall standings.

The UK holds the lead, with six golds, four silvers and three bronzes. (jb)
