The win – after Slovak winger Ondrej Duda scored the only goal of the tie in the second half – was some consolation to Legia fans after the bitter experience of being eliminated from the Champions League after fielding an ineligible player against Celtic.

The second leg will take place next Thursday at the Pepsi Stadium in Warsaw.

The team could not leave the stadium in Almaty, Kazakhstan's second largest city capital, for nearly an hour after the match, however, as police battled with Aktobe fans.

Legia's hotel was also pelted with stones after the team finally managed to leave the stadium.

“Hooligans throwing stones at the hotel. Police in balaclavas,” tweeted Legia's full back Jakub Rzezniczak as the team ate dinner before trying to leave for the airport.

Meanwhile, Ruch Chorzow drew 0 – 0 in Gliwice against Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv.

The second leg match will be played in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on August 28, and not on the eastern city of Kharkiv, with fighting between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian rebels making holding a match in the region impossible. (pg)
