Czerniak clocked in a time of 51.38 seconds on Saturday afternoon, beating Hungarian Laszlo Cseh by 0.51 seconds.

“I didn't manage to beat my personal best, but that doesn't mean very much to me at the moment,” he said.

“The most important thing is the gold,” he added.

Moments later 23-year-old Radoslaw Kawecki won Poland's second gold medal of the championships, triumphing in the 200m Backstroke with a time of 1.56,02 minutes.

“I have to admit, I was having a bit of self-doubt, and I really needed this success in my crowning event,” he said.
