The fourth-seeded Pole went down tamely 6 – 3, 6 – 4 and became the first of the top 10 seeds to leave the tournament after just three days of competition.

The 28-year-old Peng, French Open doubles champion and 2013 Wimbledon doubles winner, is ranked 39 in the singles by the WTA and will play Italian Roberta Vinci in the third round.

Radwanska, the 2012 Wimbledon semi-finalist, failed again at the US Open, a tournament in which the 25 year-old from Krakow has yet to make it past the fourth round after eight starts.

“I really want to know the answer [for her poor performances]. Then maybe I will find a way to play better here and just try another way to be in the second week,” she said after the match in New York.

Meanwhile, Jerzy Janowicz overcame Serbia's Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 to go through to the men's second round where he will meet South Africa's Kevin Anderson. (pg)
