Earlier, Germany took the bronze medal in the FIVB World Volleyball Championships, beating France 3 – 0.

Poland's 3:1 (18:25, 25:22, 25:23, 25:22) victory was the second time they beat Brazil, the defending world champions, in the tournament.

The victory came after an incredible run, where the White and Reds lost just one of their 13 matches and have become the first hosts to win the championships since Czechoslovakia in 1956.

Poland last took gold in Mexico in 1974.

The victory was a “gift for the 25th anniversary of our freedom," said President Bronislaw Komorowski, who attended the final in Katowice, referring to celebrations this year marking the fall of communism in 1989. (pg)
