Gold medallist Eugenia Bujak welcomed home

Cyclist Eugenia Bujak was given a warm welcome at Warsaw Airport on Tuesday evening as she returned home with a gold medal from the UEC Elite Track European Championships, Guadeloupe.

The 25-year-old cyclist achieved the best result of her career so far at the games, winning the women’s points race.

Speaking with journalists after touching down, she played down her personal success, paying tribute to her team-mates.

“Is it my most precious medal? It's certainly important, because it will give me confidence in subsequent tournaments, but even more important is the team, and the Olympics, which we're focusing on."

The European Championships are a key qualifying stage for the 2016 Olympic Games.

“We came fourth [in the women's team pursuit], we just missed a medal,” she noted, making it clear that the team will be firing on all cylinders in forthcoming tournaments.

Poland also won a silver in the men's sprint, but medallist Damian Zielinski did not come through customs on Tuesday evening as he had to catch a connecting flight home to Szczecin. (nh)
