A Polish referee became the victim of a brutal attack in the ring by a Croatian boxer at the end of a bout in the European Youth Boxing Championships in Zagreb on Monday.

Light-heavyweight boxer Vido Loncar, who has now been banned for life by the Croatian Boxing Association, launched the assault after referee Maciej Dziurgot stopped the fight and awarded it to the Croat's opponent, Lithuania's Algirdas Baniulis.

Vido Loncar took exception to the verdict and floored the Polish referee with a right cross to the jaw and kept attacking Maciej Dziurgot as he lay helpless on the canvas.

The violent assault continued until the Croatian was dragged from the ring by his legs.

Referee Dziurgot was taken to hospital after the incident and is reported to be “seriously injured”. (pg)
