Poland's striker and his Bayern Munich team had a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican, Wednesday, after the German side's 7 – 1 drubbing of Roma in the Champions League.

Pope Francis reportedly told the players they “played a wonderful game”.

“Football is good and healthy and a good role model for children as a team sport,” the leader of the Roman Catholic church is quoted as saying on the Bayern Munich web site.

Pope Francis, a keen football fan, met with the players from Bayern Munich following the match at the Stadio Olimpico in the Italian capital, in which Lewandowski, who joined the club in the summer from Borusia Dortmund, scored in the first half.

Bayern now top Group E in the Champions League, five points ahead of Roma after three matches. (pg)
