The team's French trainers, Stephane Antiga and Philippe Blain, were also honoured on Monday.

“Thank you, from all of Poland, for the moments of emotion and also ones of pride,” President Komorowski said at the ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.

The squad’s captain Michał Winiarski thanked fans for their support, saying, “seeing that we have won the world championships, they deserve to have won a galactic championships.”

He added that the President’s appearance at two of the games, including the final, “evidently bought them luck.”

The ceremony was also attended by players from the Polish volleyball squad which won a gold medal at the World Championships in Mexico forty years ago.

“I hope that we will follow in the footsteps of our older colleges, and after what happened this year, I know that our dreams will come true,” Captain Winiarski said. (sl/pg)
