The Polish star notched up his victory in a Ford Fiesta RS WRC, beating local legend Valentino Rossi, three-time winner of the rally.

Kubica reflected that the tyre choices were among the trickiest decisions of the event.

"Because the conditions were changing all the time and never the same on different parts of the track, it was often hard to know what to do,'' he said.

"On the final stage we were on the same tyres as Valentino and I saw at our first split that we were already quite a bit faster than him, for some reason he was slower than he had been before.

"So I knew that if we could keep going at the same pace we had a very good chance to win."

Former Formula 1 ace Kubica had to bow out of the sport owing to a severe accident at the Ronde di Andora Rally in February 2011.

The Krakow-born racer, who will celebrate his 30th birthday on Sunday, has since carved himself a niche in lower class rallies. (nh)
