“The treatment consisted of the removal of a growth of cartilage and bone growth,” team doctor Aleksander Winiarski said.

“From a technical point of view, it was a simple operation, there were no complications. The cause of discomfort has been removed, and the area will heal over a period of 2-3 weeks.”

Stoch will likely leave the hospital on Friday.

The decision to operate was a difficult one, Winiarski said, “as it will be impossible for Kamil to train for a few weeks, but at the moment there is no other option.”

If the healing goes according to plan, Stoch will still be able to participate in the ski-jumping World Cup this season.

The 27-year-old double Olympic champion sustained an injury to his ankle before the World Cup opening in Klingenthal. This had already prevented him from participating in the first competitions of the season. When he returned to training on Wednesday, he complained of knee pain, and the medical team decided to operate. (rg/jb)
