Kowalczyk announced her decision during Sunday’s freestyle sprint in the Swiss resort of Davos, during which she was knocked out in the qualifiers coming in 53rd.

The Norwegian Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg won the race, with the next spots going to her native colleagues Maiken Caspersen Falla and Celine Brun-Lie.

“Today is my last start in the World Championship this year,” Kowalczyk wrote on her Facebook page, adding that “it has been a tough year”.

The 31-year-old Polish Olympic gold medalist is not retiring however, announcing her start in the Tour de Ski at this week’s competition in Hochfilzen, Austria. (jb)
