The Krakow-born star, currently ranked World No. 6 by WTA, wrapped up the match against Nara (No. 43) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

Janowicz (ATP ranking No.44) had a trickier time against Hiroki Moriya (ATP No. 146), also from Japan, narrowly winning the first set 7-6, before being trounced in the second 2-6.

The Pole then pulled up his socks in the third set, bouncing back to win 6-3. With victory in sight, he then powered through to win the next set 7-5, finishing the match 3-1.

McEnroe keen to train Janowicz

Meanwhile, with Radwanska now making use of an extra coach in the form of Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova, another 1980s legend has shown a professional interest in Janowicz.

''If he would only agree to listen to me, I would choose someone like Janowicz,'' McEnroe said when asked who he would like to coach.

McEnroe, who was famed for his on court outbursts at umpires, has perhaps recognised a kindred spirit in Janowicz, who also struggles to keep his cool in competition. (nh)
