Radwańska, seeded sixth, lost 3:6, 6:2, 1:6, her worst result in five years in the competition.

In previous years, the quarter-finals marked the finishing point for Radwańska, with her dropping out at this stage in 2008, 2011 and 2013.

However, last year the Kraków-based player managed to make it to the semi-final, losing out to Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova.

The 25-year-old was the last of the Polish singles players to take part in the Australian Open. Jerzy Janowicz dropped out in the third round, with Radwańska’s younger sister Urszula exiting the tournament after a first-round loss. (jb)
