“I want to congratulate, but also to thank you for a remarkable feat that brought fame to Poland – in the name of our country – around the world. Your feat sparked huge interest and great admiration,” Polish President Bronisław Komorwoski told the 68-year-old Doba during a ceremony on Monday.

The intrepid adventurer used nothing but his own muscle power to row himself across the widest part of the Atlantic between October 2013 and April 2014.

In February he won the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year award in an online poll on the website of the famed US magazine.

The Polonia Restituta - Poland Reborn medal is one of Poland's highest orders, and is given for outstanding achievements in the fields of sports, sciences, art, economics among other feats. (rg)
