The three-set struggle was almost an exact repeat of the pair's clash at the Australian Open last month, when Williams beat Radwańska 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 to make her first grand slam quarter-final since 2010.

Radwańska managed to take three more games off Williams this time, but the result remains a disappointment for the World No. 8, who is still ranked higher than her American rival (No.17).

The Pole's fans were on the edge of their seats after the second set, with Radwańska crushing Williams 6-1, raising hopes for a triumphant third set. But it was not to be.

Williams commented after the match that she was relieved to have pulled through.

"Our last match was three sets and it felt like as soon as I thought I was going to win at 5-1, she hit nothing but winners,'' she said.

''It was a challenge and I'm glad to have gotten through," Williams said.

"I think she played even better than that match in Australia and she made it a challenge." (nh)
