Poland sends record number of athletes to European Championships

Poland is to send 45 athletes to compete in the upcoming European Athletics Indoor Championships in the Czech capital, Prague, which kick off on Friday.

As many as 363 male athletes and 280 female athletes from 49 countries are slated to participate in the event.

If all the athletes billed to take part do start in their respective events, it will be a record-breaking championship in terms of participation, beating the previous record set in Birmingham eight years ago, when 587 competitors from 47 countries took part.

Only minnows Liechtenstein will not be sending a delegation of athletes for the event.

Meanwhile, the youngest athlete to represent Poland will be 17-year-old sprinter Ewa Swoboda, while the oldest competitor is 1,500m specialist Renata Pliś, who turned 30 in February. (jb)
