A mistake by Irish left-back Robbie Brady in the 26th minute made way for Sławomir Peszko to give Poland’s only goal of the match.

At the end of the first half, the Poles were lucky when a strike by Ireland’s Aiden McGeady just missed the goal.

In the second half, the Republic stepped up their game and raised the pressure against Poland, who ultimately let in a goal in injury time after a header by Wesley Hoolahan gave fresh substitute Shane Long a chance to score from just outside the six-yard box.

Despite only gaining one point after the fixture, Poland continues to lead Group D with 11 points in the Euro 2016 qualifying round, only one point ahead of Germany and Scotland, who both managed secure victories over the weekend against Georgia and Gibraltar respectively.

Poland’s next Euro 2016 qualifier is home against Georgia on 13 June. (jb)
