The 21-year-old, who is studying finance at East Tennessee State University, won two National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournaments in 2014, becoming the first member of his university to win such a fixture in four years.

''I am a very ambitious player, but I'm not going lose myself in a wave of euphoria,'' Meronk commented.

''There's still a lot of work ahead of me,'' he added, noting that team-work is key in the NCAA.

At present, 1600 players feature in the World Amateur Golfing Ranking.

Although golf had been growing in popularity in Poland in the years leading up to World War II, it became an obscure sport during the communist era. However, it started to make a comeback after 1989, and a number of golf courses have been laid out across the country. (nh)
