Until this month, the Krakow-born player had maintained her place in the top ten since October 2011, reaching No.2 in July 2012.

“I've seen lots of players over the years who've been at the top and then fallen,” Radwańska told Polish Radio.

“It's not the case that once you've reached the top, you stay there,” she said, noting that Serena Williams – her nemesis at the 2012 Wimbledon final – is a rare exception.

However, the 26-year-old argued that women's tennis has changed and that these days, even players ranked in the thirties and forties play on an extremely high level.

Fans had been keeping fingers crossed earlier this season, after it was announced that Radwańska would be teaming up with veteran star Martina Navratilova for some additional coaching.

However, Radwańska has only made one semi-final this year (on home ground at the Katowice Open) and Navratilova stepped down fro her part-time post in late April. (nh)
