Over a dozen golf courses in Poland have signed an agreement with PGA Polska, due to which juniors will be able to play for free,” confirmed Jarosław Sroka, chairman of PGA Polska, in an interview with Polish Radio.

As the careers of the greatest golf stars show, such as those of Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy, you can start playing golf at the age of three, although the optimum age to begin is at six or eight.”

Golf was beginning to get off the ground in pre-WW2 Poland, but it virtually disappeared during the communist era.

However, following 1989, the sport made a comeback, with courses being laid out across Poland.

Referring to Poland's tennis star of the 1970s and 1980s Wojciech Fibak, Sroka said Polish golfers are waiting for a star similar of stature to break through in the golfing world.

Nevertheless, Poland has had some success in recent weeks, with 21-year-old Adrian Meronk becoming the first ever Pole to make the top 50 of the World Amateur Golfing Ranking (WAGR). (nh)
