The German cyclist was the first to cross the line in the first stage of the competition in the Polish capital on Sunday. He was well protected by his team in the final few kilometres and then sprinted to the end.

Kittel was recently left off Giant-Alpecin's Tour team following an illness. He narrowly beat Australia’s Caleb Ewan in the last corners of the course in Warsaw’s Old Town.

This means that Kittel is the first leader of this year’s Tour of Poland and will lead the second leg of the tour – a 146 kilometre (90.7 miles) race Częstochowa to Dąbrowa Górnicza in the south of the country. (rg/rk)
