Poland's hopes of a medal were dashed in the women's 4x400m relay when Joanna Linkiewicz dropped the baton in the heats at the World Championships in Beijing.

Linkiewicz, who ran the third leg of the race, successfully took the baton from Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz, but dropped it shortly afterwards.

She rushed to pick up the lost baton, but by then there was little chance of getting back in the race.

Poland ultimately finished seventh, and Linkiewicz was unable to hold back the tears after the upset.

Team-mate Justyna Świety, who ran the final leg, said after the race that “I'd rather not talk about it at the moment as emotions are running high.

We were all well-prepared, we were even expecting a new Polish record.”

Poland is currently coming fifth in the medal table, with two golds, one silver and three bronzes.

The World Championships end on Sunday 30 August. (nh/rk)
