The match had offered the 33-year-old Pole his first ever chance to enter a Grand Slam final in mixed doubles.

He has pulled off a Grand Slam final before in the men's doubles, winning the Australian Open with Robert Lindstedt in 2014.

Meanwhile, the American duo's victory in New York gives Querrey a rare shot at winning both the mixed doubles and the men's doubles, having entered the semi-final for the latter together with partner Steve Johnson.

The last man to achieve the feat at the US Open was Bob Brown in 2010. (nh)
