The Red and Whites managed to get two goals in the first half of the game. The first, in the 13th minute was a well-executed corner kick to Krychowiak who neatly put it in the net.

A penalty just three minutes later saw Ireland even out the score.

However, the man of the game, Poland's Robert Lewandowski, managed to score the deciding goal in the 41st minute, deftly getting the ball past Irish goalie Randolph.

Despite there not being any goals, the second half saw the Irish team losing some steam against the hosts. A red card in extra time saw Ireland's John O'Shea exiting the pitch, bringing the game to an end.

Poland is therefore now the runner up in Group D in the qualifying round of the competition and will be playing in France.

The competition kicks off on 10 June 2016, with the final game being played on 10 July. (rg/rk)
