Poland gunning to host EuroBasket 2017

Chairman of the Polish Basketball Federation Grzegorz Bachański is keeping his fingers crossed, with three weeks to go before the host of EuroBasket 2017 is announced.

Besides Poland, four other countries are still in the running: Finland, Turkey, Israel and Romania.
“We are trying very hard,” Bachański told Polish Radio.
He acknowledged that costs are key, with the licence alone running to EUR 1.4 million.
“Of course, the Polish Basketball Federation cannot back this event alone,” he said, noting he is seeking sponsorship and funding from local authorities.
“At the moment, our most serious talks are with the city of Łódż,” he revealed.
Poland has hosted the European basketball championship twice before, in 1963 and 2009. (nh/di)
