The winner of the Berlin play-offs qualifies for the Olympics automatically while Poland, after finishing the tournament third, will have a further chance to qualify for Rio in May in Japan.
After the win against Germany, Polish player Marcin Możdżonek told reporters, “This in a incredibly important victory. We were a step away from a tragedy for Polish volleyball.
“True, the Germans played very well, but that would not have justified us in any way if we had lost.”
Możdżonek added, “We didn’t play our best game and at times even played very badly. But despite everything we overcame our weaknesses... and played to the very end, fighting for every ball.”
Russia was to play France in the tournament final later on Sunday. (pk)
