A Serbian penalty shot stopped by Polish goalie Sławomir Szmal in the last minute of the match proved decisive, ensuring Poland victory.
The Poles, who did not play brilliantly against a surprisingly solid Serbia, were boosted by the support of 14,100 spectators at the Kraków Tauron Arena, among whom were Polish president Andrzej Duda and sports minister Witold Bańka.
Poland will play against Macedonia and France on 17 and 19 January respectively. (rg/pk)
