Boxing: Szpilka KO'd in fight with Wilder

Poland's Artur Szpilka was knocked out by undefeated heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder in a nail-biting match in the US on Sunday.

Hitting hard with a right-hand blow early in the ninth round, Wilder sent Szpilka to the floor, where the Pole stayed for several minutes before being taken out on a stretcher.

At the time of the knockout, Wilder was leading 78-74, 78-74 and 77-75 on the scoreboard.

Szpilka was trying to become the first Polish boxer to ever win the coveted heavyweight title.

Following the match, Szpilka, seen with a neck brace and with scars on his face in a picture sent from a hospital bed, thanked his fans for their support and apologised for letting them down. (rg/pk)
