Jerzy Janowicz's Australian Open campaign ended where it began on Tuesday with defeat at the hands of American John Isner, the latter winning 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

The odds had been stacked against the 25-year-old Pole, with Isner currently ranked No.10 in the world by ATP, while Janowicz is No.56.

Janowicz didn't go down without a fight, winning the second set in a highly charged tie-break.

However, Polish fans will be disappointed that the Łódź-born player did not live up to the promise that he had shown in the past.

Janowicz blazed into the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2013, while last year at the Australian Open he made the third round.

Polish hopes will now be focused on Agnieszka Radwańska, who glided through the first round on Monday. Currently ranked No.4 by WTA, Radwańska is on fine form, having won the Shenzhen Open earlier this month, following on from her victory in the prestigious WTA Finals in November 2015. (nh/pk)
