Spain’s Real Madrid is preparing a EUR 98 million bid to tempt Polish ace Robert Lewandowski away from Bayern Munich, Britain’s The Sun tabloid has reported.

The Sun added, however, that Bayern’s sporting director Matthias Sammer has downplayed “new rumours.”

The paper quoted Sammer as saying: “There are always new rumours […] We don’t blame Robert, it is not his fault. That is all complete nonsense.”

Nevertheless, the tabloid said the Polish superstar, one of the most coveted players in international football, could be on his way out of the German side.

Lewandowski has scored 17 goals for Bayern this season in Bundesliga games. His 2014 transfer from Borussia Dortmund to fellow Bundesliga side Bayern Munich has been named the best free transfer of the last 20 years by French sports daily L'Équipe.

“It's difficult to put a price on Robert Lewandowski, who at the moment is probably the best number 9 in the world,” L'Équipe argued in December. (pk)
