Coach Michael Biegler, who is German, offered his resignation after Poland lost 23-37 to Croatia on Wednesday night, the PAP news agency reported.

The defeat deprived the Polish hosts of a place in the semi-finals of the EHF European Men's Handball Championship in the southern city of Kraków.

Biegler’s resignation was accepted by the Polish Handball Association on Thursday.

The Poles will play their last match under Biegler on Friday, taking on Sweden for seventh place in the European tournament.

Biegler started with the Polish team in autumn of 2012, steering the squad to bronze in the 2015 world championships in Qatar. (pk)
