Polish boxing champ Rudkowski dies

Wiesław Rudkowski, one of the finest Polish boxers of the 1970s, has died in Warsaw after a serious illness, aged 69.

His greatest success was the silver medal at the Munich Games in 1972, in the middleweight category.

He also took part in the Mexico Games in 1968 and in the European Championships, winning the bronze in 1971, the silver in 1973 and the gold medal in 1975. He held ten national championship titles.

After the end of his career, Wiesław Rudkowski worked as the coach of the national Polish boxing team.

In 1999 he received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland for his services to Polish sports. (mk/rg)
