The strong performance on Sunday by the Polish team, comprising Aleksandra Socha, Małgorzata Kozaczuk, Katarzyna Kędziora and Marta Puda, means they are assured of a place in this summer’s Olympics.
The Poles beat Hungary 45:34 in Sint-Niklaas.
Adam Konopka, head of the Polish Fencing Association, said he was “overjoyed”, adding that the Poles were in with a chance of an Olympic medal.
Konopka said: “Only eight teams are going to the Olympics. It's really the crème de la crème. There are no weak competitors there, to be in this group means a lot… and there is a chance for a medal.” (pk)
