The former head of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), Michał Listkiewicz, said that it would be good for FIFA to elect a European president, ahead of an election on Friday.

“Let us not expect a great revolution. Since there is no president, [FIFA] needs to choose a new one. This is normal. They just have to choose a man who will clean the image of FIFA, sort some things out. He will guide the reform process that has already been initiated, but too late – in my opinion – by the former President Blatter,” Listkiewicz said, adding that the football community would be at an advantage if the president remained a European.

The field of hopefuls to replace Sepp Blatter as FIFA president included Middle Eastern royalty, businessmen, veteran soccer administrators and at least one former political prisoner.

Former head Sepp Blatter was suspended from FIFA in 2015 after the association was hit by a corruption scandal, which saw at least a dozen global arrests. (rg/di)
