Agnieszka Radwanska’s father and trainer Robert was furious with his daughter after she lost in straight sets to Maria Sharapova in the last 16 of the French Open on Monday. “She needs a psychiatrist,” he said.

“You have to ask the rhetorical question - can you collapse in a match more than Agnieszka did today - you cannot, ” Robert said after Radwanska lost to Sharapova 6-7 (4) 5-7.

He lambasted Agnieszka for showing “so little resistance mentally” after she let promising positions in both sets slide, as she was ground down by the Russian in two hours on Court Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros.

“She will never win anything big if she plays like that,” said Agnieszka‘s infamously combustible trainer.

The Pole, who reached the quarter finals in the Australian Open in January, led 4 - 1 in the first set and then 2 - 0 in the second, but the Russian’s strength eventually came through.

Asked by journalists what the solution was, Robert Radwanska, clearly apoplectic, said “A psychiatrist, psychologist…something like that”.

This is not the first time tension in the Radwanska household has been seen as Roland Garros. After constantly criticising her from the stands during her second round loss at the French Open in 2009, Agnieszka responded angrily: “Shut up and go away with your mathematics,” referring to his statistical analysis of her play.

Sharapova will now play Andrea Petkovic in the quarters. (pg)
