In an earlier Facebook post, Doba had complained about the “arrest” of the food and the bureaucracy of the authorities in the US.

“It sounds absurd to me that the food has been ‘arrested’ for several weeks,” Doba wrote earlier this week after arriving . “I am preparing for the most difficult journey of my life. Unfortunately, a few days before the planned start on 29 May, I do not know if it will happen.”

He added: “The Americans are examining whether the food prepared for me in Poland [which is designed] only for consumption during the trip will not hurt [average] Americans.”

In a later posting Doba said that the expedition would take place as planned after the customs department released his food supply.

Doba plans to set off from the Hudson river in New Jersey in the US on Sunday, on a route of over 3,000 nautical miles. He will head southeast in a bid to avoid transatlantic liners and fierce storms.

He aims to reach Europe to meet his family to celebrate his 70th birthday. (rg)
