Polish veteran kayaker Aleksander Doba, attempting his third and most difficult solo transatlantic crossing, has still not made it out onto the open ocean, and is waiting for the wind to change.

Doba, who set off on Sunday, has moored his kayak to a tree trunk protruding from the water by the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge, which connects the New York City boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn.

He has decided not to fight a wind blowing from the east - from the ocean.

Piotr Chmieliński, one of the expedition’s organizers, told Polish Radio that Doba did not want to interrupt his adventure and start all over again.

Chmieliński added that Doba was reckoning with the prospect that it could take a week for the wind to change.

The adventurer aims to reach Lisbon, Portugal, by September 10, the day of his 70th birthday, after more than three months at sea.

Doba has already crossed the Atlantic but in the opposite direction, from Europe to North America.

The 8,000 km northerly route he is now undertaking from America to Europe is more difficult, with lower temperatures and fiercer storms. (pk)
