The International Weightlifting Federation reanalysed blood samples taken from weightlifters after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and published a list of seven athletes who are now suspected of taking illegal substances, including Ilyin. The federation found the banned steroid Stanozolol in his blood.

“The IWF imposed mandatory provisional suspensions upon the athletes, who remain provisionally suspended in view of potential anti-doping rule violations until their cases are closed,” said a report on the IWF’s website.

If the federation rules that Ilyin was using an illegal substance, Poland’s Kołecki, who was second in the competition, will be named Olympic champion. (tf/pk)
