The management board of the Polish Weightlifting Association (PZPC) decided not to remove Tomasz Zieliński (94kg category) and Krzysztof Szramiak (77kg) from the national team which will compete at the Olympics in Rio.

"It was a difficult decision, but we had no other choice" than keeping them on the team, said Szymon Kołecki from the PZPC.

He added, however, that the two weightlifters had proved wayward in their behaviour.

"Both athletes ignored a series of preparations for the Olympics, they did not attend official meets, regularly sent in sick notes, and explained their absence with various and strange reasons. They wanted to train only at their clubs, and we do not agree to that,” said Kołecki.

He added that “athletes preparing for the most important event in four years should be under the care and control of the official training staff.”

The Olympics in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro will be held between 5-21 August. (rg)
