The fifth stage, featuring especially steep climbs, proved a challenge for all the cyclists. Majka, who usually performs well in mountain stages, once again proved he is at his best in difficult terrain.
At the beginning of the race, Majka from the Tinkoff team, broke away from the peloton with a group of eight other cyclists, including another Pole, Bartosz Huzarski of the Bora-Argon 18 team.
Majka finished third, but at 73rd place in the general classification he is still 22 minutes and 43 seconds behind the new leader, Belgium’s Greg Van Avermaet of team BMC.
Huzarski, who was also in the breakaway group, finished the race in sixth position. (tf/pk)
