Polish athletes have won four medals at the tournament so far – in addition to Małachowski and Hoffmann, Anita Włodarczyk took gold in the women’s hammer throw, while Robert Sobera won the men’s pole vault on Friday.

This is the second European championships gold for world champion Małachowski, who secured first place with a 67.06m throw. The 33-year-old Pole now has his eye on the gold at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Hoffmann achieved a personal best on Saturday with his 17.16m jump and finished second, 4cm behind Germany’s Max Heb. (mol/pk)
