Poland won praise for their spirited performance under coach Adam Nawałka in the Euro 2016 championships in France last month, making it through to the quarter-finals in their best ever result at the tournament.

They lost on penalties to Portugal, who went on to win the championships.

Three years ago, Poland were way down in the FIFA table, occupying a lowly 78th position.

Argentina, Belgium and Colombia continue to occupy the top three spots in the new ranking.

The Polish Football Association (PZPN) announced last week that Nawałka will continue as manager of the Polish team at least until the end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifications. (pk)
